What Do You Call An Athlete With A Book In His Hand?

A nerd can be defined in so many different ways. From the stereotypical guy with the pocket protector, to grown men who enjoy wearing fanny packs from time to time, or the most common is the kid who never leaves the library or is too busy reading to have fun. But is the third kid any different than your All State High School quarterback? Or your baseball teams star pitcher? What would happen if you say took the sport away from athlete?

Well as I have found this year, all athletes are nerds. However, not all nerds are athletes. To prove this we start with how you define a nerd. Through my eyes, a nerd is someone who obsesses over one thing to the point of where it takes over his life. Now generally we think of nerds and automatically think World of Warcraft. (or Dungeons and Dragons depending on who's reading)But if we think of a nerd as being someone who obsesses over something to the point that it controls their life, that is an athlete in a nutshell.

Now, lets skew our viewpoints even further. What happens if you take the sport away from the athlete? Well for this athlete at least, he became a nerd. I switched from concentrating all my time in the weight room, in lessons, and running, to a double Major in Political Science and Economics and a Minor in Pre-Law. In essence a nerd is someone with an addictive personality who needs something to fill his or her life. If you remove one scenario, another one will take its place. I never realized how easy it was to get lost in your studies until I didn't have a distraction. I am a nerd.
