Well, in the views of this guy, its neither. It's not a photograph or a love letter. The purest form of art by the very nature of it, guarantees pure anonymity, and lets you express your creativity without limits.

So, by these standards the purest form of art, in my eyes, exists on the walls of any bathroom stall from here to Kathmandu. Think about it, in a political system in which you can't say anything negative about the government without being thrown in a cell with the key thrown away the only way to say what you want is when your in complete privacy. So obviously the next logical step would be to express yourself on the walls of the bathroom stalls while your rebounding from the goulash you ate the night before. And since most people do their best thinking on the can, its the best of both worlds.

Stall art is the perfect way to express your self while enjoying your early morning B.M. You get feed back over the course of the day, and can really let your opinions flow.

So, the next time your sitting there reading a good book, or playing a game on your iphone, or even just pondering life's big questions, take a gander around the stall. It might just change your life.

Hell Week, Minus the Toga...

The worth time of year in any student's life, no matter what grade your in, is finals week. This week, as you would infer, gets harder and harder the older you get. Freshman year in High School, you start with a couple projects or tests that bruise your ego and study habits. However by senior year, you’re sitting in a quiet room, stress-fully reminiscing about the degree of difficulty of your finals a few short years ago. This brings us to college, or as its better known, Hell Week.

Now, as normal sane person would, all semester you attend class. As you normally do in class, you act like a sponge, taking notes, and soaking up as much knowledge from your professors as possible. Then, come finals time, it’s like someone rung out your sponge.

The problem is that your average college student doesn't have perfect recall. Not to mention the couple classes missed, and the few 9AM classes in which you’re still your still feeling the ample effects of the start of your weekend the night before. This causes our brilliant young minds to embark on something so intertwined with college life, it makes a better pair than chocolate and peanut butter, binging. Except, this time it's not substance abuse, it's knowledge abuse.

To binge is the act of gorging yourself with a particular stimulus. In this case, what your binging on is studying. During this week, college students all across the nation, this one included, review the course material for a final so heavily, that they develop an intimate relationship with your notes. This causes erratic eating and sleeping schedules, and turn all those who engage in such methods into neurotic stress-filled drones.

What's the end result? Well, you usually do well on finals due to the fact that thanks to your obsessive study methods, you know the material better than you know yourself. You've spent so much time with your notes, that you both have each other’s name tattooed on your asses. Not to mention the after effects. Now, I'm not sure if you're aware, but the world doesn't operate on a schedule that starts at 1:30PM and ends around 4:30AM. This is not only not healthy, but there's only so much television one can watch before you run out of reruns in the OnDemand library, and cable TV past 2AM is awful. It's all news reruns, syndicated cop shows, and infomercials of everything from Billy Mays' love juice to the Serial Killers' dream vacuum. (It never looses suction and cleans deep down to get the bloodstains you missed with the bleach!) Or my personal favorite, the hand-held electric saw that can cut a car in half, because I remember the last time I needed to saw through an elephant.

Bottom line, Hell Week has lasting effects. Surviving this week is like finishing a Marathon. You feel this lasting sense of accomplishment, coupled by the fatigue of every muscle in your body. Something needs to be done about this week. I can't even fathom next semester, or better yet, the next seven years.

What Do You Call An Athlete With A Book In His Hand?

A nerd can be defined in so many different ways. From the stereotypical guy with the pocket protector, to grown men who enjoy wearing fanny packs from time to time, or the most common is the kid who never leaves the library or is too busy reading to have fun. But is the third kid any different than your All State High School quarterback? Or your baseball teams star pitcher? What would happen if you say took the sport away from athlete?

Well as I have found this year, all athletes are nerds. However, not all nerds are athletes. To prove this we start with how you define a nerd. Through my eyes, a nerd is someone who obsesses over one thing to the point of where it takes over his life. Now generally we think of nerds and automatically think World of Warcraft. (or Dungeons and Dragons depending on who's reading)But if we think of a nerd as being someone who obsesses over something to the point that it controls their life, that is an athlete in a nutshell.

Now, lets skew our viewpoints even further. What happens if you take the sport away from the athlete? Well for this athlete at least, he became a nerd. I switched from concentrating all my time in the weight room, in lessons, and running, to a double Major in Political Science and Economics and a Minor in Pre-Law. In essence a nerd is someone with an addictive personality who needs something to fill his or her life. If you remove one scenario, another one will take its place. I never realized how easy it was to get lost in your studies until I didn't have a distraction. I am a nerd.

My Perfect Day…

My perfect day begins at 9:30am. I awake to a certain someone next to me, and to a wonderful, bright, sunny, 80 degree day, without a cloud in the sky. It sounds cliché, but after all, it is perfect baseball weather. After I awake, my perfect day continues with an elaborate yet simple, breakfast of Bacon, Egg, and Cheese sandwiches prepared by yours truly. (Everything’s better made from scratch…)

After eating breakfast outside of the deck overlooking the ocean, the smell of the ocean air draws us to the beach. The sun is nice and hot, and the water is as pictured in the movies - crystal clear and the ideal shade of blue. The water is the perfect temperature, not too cold, but still a nice refreshing relief from the hot sun. As the waves crash down on the shore, my day continues with a nice long stroll on the beach with the certain someone mentioned earlier. We walk for miles, but it seems like only blocks, picking up sea shells along the way. Once we arrive at the end of the island where the bay meets the ocean the view is breath taking. We just kind of stare at it for what seems like minutes but were actually a couple hours. But not too late, I have to get back in time to pitch for the newest franchise in Major League Baseball, the Honolulu Samoan’s. Because what’s better than white sandy beaches by day and baseball by night?

As I arrive at the cathedral-esque ballpark, it feels just like any other day. I go into the locker room giving the keys of my carbon colored hybrid Shelby Mustang Convertible, to the valet. I walk into the locker room and get ready for my big game everything is in order from my lucky socks to my hat from our World Series run last year. I grab my cleats, glove, and fresh unopened bottle of ice cold water, and make my way out to the bullpen to strap on my cleats, stretch and throw.

After my cleats are tied, I take a deep breath and look around at the magnificent silhouette of the empty ballpark in the twilight, before fans make their way through the gates into the stadium. I pop a couple of everlasting pieces of bubble gum into my mouth and I’m ready to go.

Once the game starts, I’m cruising along. After my first time facing the opposing lineup, there’s not even a scratch on the ball. Nine up, nine down, nine strike outs. Surprisingly all have been on three or four pitches, so my pitch count is still low. The second time through their lineup, and still nothing. Eighteen up, and eighteen down, and the feeling that is racing through my body right now is surreal. Every pitch is working, and my ability to locate them is unbelievable. Nine outs left until perfection and I am calmer than a kid playing in the back yard.

Each at bat, the same thing happens. Strike one, strike two, and strike three. Ten out of the eighteen strike outs have been on a knee buckling curveball that starts around the hitter’s nose, and before they can smell the leather, the ball drops to their toes. I’m closing in on perfection, but all I can think about are the waves from the beach this afternoon. Before I know it, it’s already the top of the ninth. I start off the first batter with a curveball legends are made of, clocked at 68 mph for strike one. The next pitch, a 98 mph fastball, on the eighteenth inch of the outside of the plate. Untouchable, for strike two. The third pitch of the at bat is a changeup, which resembles the fastball until about 5 feet in front of home plate, when the bottom literally falls out of it and it drops like a rock. Strike three. As the next batter approaches the plate, all I feel is the white sand between my toes. Before I know it, he strikes out. One out away from perfection and…
“Honey, wake up. It’s almost noon.”

A Glimpse of the World Through My Eyes...

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; The one quote from the movie, “The Believer,” that I always use to describe Judaism is, “Nothing but nothingness.” I still subscribe to these beliefs and this philosophy as this year has progressed. A couple weeks ago I was doing some research to see how Jewish law felt about tattoos. I wasn’t thinking anything flamboyant, but just the Star of David about the size of a quarter on my forearm. My own little sign of respect towards loved ones who have left this world for greener pastures. It turns out tattoos like everything else against Jewish law, has no actual punishment. The entire religion is on the honor system. If you choose not to acknowledge a holiday for whatever reason, that’s ok, as long as you atone for it later. These principals are how I’ve been raised. Yeah you get grounded occasionally, or get the car taken away, but the brunt of the relationship between my parents and I, is based on trust. If you don’t do your homework, you do not have to answer to us, as long as you’re prepared to deal with the consequences. As long as you learn from your mistakes, then there’s no reason for punishment. That’s Judaism in a nut shell. Learn from your past indiscretions, and the lord will forgive.

As for my views on my future, I still intend on going to college and majoring in Political Science. After this I still plan on attending Law school. The only difference is now I not only know where I’m going to school, but know what I need to do to achieve my goal of getting accepted to Law School. The major lesson I learned throughout this college process is that life sucks. No matter your background, or how hard you worked, all the financial aid process comes down to is how much money your parents make and how much debt you’re willing to inherit. I know that sounds like a cynical view of paying for college, but I have experienced this first hand.

Up to about late April, I was planning to attend Drew University to major in Political Science and be a starting pitcher on the Rangers, Drew’s baseball team. April came and I was so excited, I got accepted and was going down on accepted student’s day to visit some of my future teammates. The only problem was Drew’s tuition is $53,000 per year. Now my mom is a teacher with her master’s in Education, and her 6th year in administration, and my dad is a marketing director for a small non-profit organization in New Haven. The average aid package for Drew was about $18,000, which you would think is for kids with financial standing such as myself. Well, I received at first, $6,500 total in financial aid. This, if I had enrolled all four years at Drew, would’ve left me in debt past my eyeballs. I think the number was about $103,000, even after the generous $45,000 college fund left to me by my grandparents. So, like any determined young mind would have, I appealed the decision to the President of the university, the financial aid director, and the Provost of the university. After about two weeks and about 5 different letters, it got me about $3,500 more in aid. Still, nowhere near enough.

The light at the end of the tunnel brings me to my final outlook on life mentioned in my Worldview, fate. I believe that everything does happen for a reason. In this particular instance, my best friend, Zach Vaughn, had the similar troubles with his top choice, the University of Vermont. Because of this, the school we had both applied to, Eastern Connecticut State University, which on both our lists was about our third choice, is where we will be attending next fall. We have been inseparable since we met the first day of kindergarten, and now we will be roommates at college. Everything has a funny way of working itself out. Every time I think about life a quote comes to mind. It’s from the movie, “Accepted,” in which the main character gets rejected from every school he applies to, so instead of facing his parents he starts his own school. Well this quote, is from Lewis Black, who plays the main characters mentor, who just so happens to be a washed up former dean of a college. “What is learning, it's paying attention. It's opening you up to the big ball of s*** that we call life. And what's the worst thing that could happen is you get bit in the ass. Well, as Colin stated in his blog, (Yes, I read your blog) this is an extremely difficult question to answer. This most likely do to the fact of knowledge that radiated off our classroom 6th period. Everything from Kat's word vomit of whatever news story popped up on her email, to Colin and Sean's daily gossip over what ever they did through out the day. And of course Miller's new applications on his Iphone, which I still don't think he's put down.

But yes, what I learned. Well, of the time I spent researching my topic, I was like a green sponge of knowledge. I started with just the topic of going green, and read articles from everything from Newsweek, to Red, Green, and Blue.com. All of these articles, however informing they were, just provided a tsunami of information, and I had forgotten my life vest. I had no idea where to begin.

So with the help of Miller, I crafted the topic of what school districts are doing to be more environmentally conscious.

From this, it was easier to research my topic. I found out that schools do everything from cutting buses and making kids walk to school, to buying solar generators that take 30 years to pay for themselves. Also, schools are extremely wasteful, but what they do with the waste affect their carbon footprint.

The final aspect of my topic was what Branford does to keep our school in tip top environmental shape. This part of the project was to connect the topic to something that affects me. Cause yeah kids in Missouri have to walk 3 miles to school, but that's virtually across the universe, why do I care?

Well, it turns out our school not only has a massive energy generator, but we have huge solar panels to go along with the generator, on the roof of the F wing. Right next to the pool. We also recycle a lot, and dispose of our trash in a landfill in an undisclosed location, probably somewhere in New Jersey, everyone else seems to.

And finally, the biggest thing I discovered in this class was cameroid.com. It's wildly addicting. Overall, this was an amazing class. Its been a pleasure Miller, thanks for a great semester.

Does our normal green carbon footprint turn into an old brown shoe come holiday season?

Well first off this has nothing to do with my research project it's just a question I was pondering while on a six hour road trip to Philadelphia, PA, to visit family. The title is for you Miller. But, do our environmentally conscious way take a back seat to Santa's sleigh come Christmas time?

We all do it. Everyone has gone on the drive over the river and through the woods, to spend time with their relatives on Christmas. Its an American tradition, unwrap the presents under the tree then hop in the family sedan and drive 500 miles. But is this tradition hurting our environment?

I mean think about all the paper used for Christmas cards. Or amount of electricity it takes to power candy land down the street. All these things that we are all so worried about 11 months of the year, just seem to slip our minds when we smell fresh gingerbread cookies.

So maybe next year we should maybe tone down the lights. Or maybe buy a web cam to cut out the driving. And apparently they make these things called E-cards, who knew!

I mean I enjoy the 10 hours in the car and the awkward family memories as much as the next guy, but maybe its the not the best thing for Mother Nature. You don't get any points if NASA can identify your house.

INTERVIEW... Would you happen to know who handles the energy needs for BHS or the school district of Branford?

2. How many students are currently enrolled in BHS?

3. Of these students, what percentage would you say drive to school?

4. And, how many trips each student makes to and from school, for sports, extra curricular activities, etc?

5. How many take the bus?

6. This might seem like an odd question, but what do you think is the average trip length for kids who drive to school?

Now lets shift gears to energy usuage.

7. Do you know the number of MWh of electricity BHS uses a year?

8. And of the energy we use, what percent is from renewable energy sources?

9. How much natural gas does BHS use over the course of a school year?

I'd just like to ask a few questions about the waste we produce here at BHS...

10. How much of the waste we produce, ends up in a landfill?

11. How much of the waste is incinerated?

12. Well, now that I haved asked you about the things we produce, how do you think BHS could cut our emissions?

13. What solutions can you think of?

For starters: using more efficient light bulbs, carpooling, composting, recycled paper

14. Are any of these examples things we do currently?

15. And if not, what do we do to conserve energy at our school?

16. Are these the best ways to do so in your mind?

17. I understand we have a solar powered generator at BHS, how often is that used?

18. Is it enough, that it has payed for itself already?

19. Are there other alternative energy uses currently empoloyed at BHS or any of the schools in the district?

20. Since, I have collected all this data, would you like to know BHS' carbon footprint?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blevy25.blogspot.com/2009/12/interview-finally.html' title='INTERVIEW... This website, is a sort of how to guide, to making your school more Eco-friendly. Pretty much a, Going Green For Dummies, if you will.

First things first, to start your schools transformation, you need to ask the right questions, such as:

What is our capacity here? What do we have control of? What don't we have control of? Make a checklist -- this might include recycling, energy use, pesticide and chemical use, indoor air quality, food waste, water efficiency, and so on.

Next, you need to get your school to believe, and not just the teachers and administrators, but the students. You'd be surprised, but you can't really make any change in your school, good or bad, without getting your student body to believe that whatever your changing is whats best for the school. You can do this by educating your student body on your goal, which in this case would be running our school more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Host school events yo raise money. Unfortunately going green costs green. It's not cheap in the short term but in the long term, it will pay for itself. Once you get the ball rolling, you get your local government involved and use grants and what not to fund your schools transformation.

All this however, is useless unless someone gets the ball rolling.

Here, There, and Everywhere...

Yesterday while researching what kind of a carbon footprint schools leave, I came across this article in Newsweek from September, about a school district in Columbia, Missouri, that is slowly doing away with school buses.

As it turns out, the cost of the diesel fuel needed to power all the school buses has risen 34% over the past two years to a whopping $4.28/gallon. For the typical school district, Cities and states spend $14.7 billion annually transporting students to school; for the typical school district, bus bills total 5 percent of the budget. Administrators in towns that have made these cutbacks aren't worried because studies have shown that whether you take the bus or not, doesn't have an affect on a child's test scores. It's just a lot tougher to do homework while walking.

In the grand scheme of things this might seem like a good idea, but it could backfire. Parents who think that his or her kid lives too far to walk, will start driving their children to school.

"On average, one school bus replaces 36 private vehicles," says Mike Martin of the National Association for Pupil Transportation, a pro-busing advocacy group.

There are alternatives to normal school buses. As of now, the diesel fuel buses used by school districts around the country get 7 MPG. Makes a hummer seem like a sports car. The alternative are diesel-electric hybrid buses which get about 12, but cost $180,000 per bus, which is just about double the price of a normal school bus.

Does the cost now out way the cost in the long run?

But hey, who knew. All this time we were cutting teachers, when the real money was in the school bus.

How Do Schools Go Green?

Green schools can save school districts boatloads of money. With the upcoming summit in Copenhagen looming, an article in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magizine posed the question, "Who pays for Global Warming?"

Now usually the country that makes the mess pays for the clean up. But, not in this case. The question was not only talking about the hollistic costs, but the physical costs. One of the many proposals to answer this question is "climate debt."

Climate debt is the idea of paying developing countries reparations for damages caused by developed countries. Take tsunamis for example. In Indonesia in 2004 over 200,000 people
were killed and over 1,000,000 people's homes were destroyed. Should Indonesia have to pay for a natural distaster that was made 10 times worse by industrialized nations and their,"clean coal?"

Personally, I think this is a good idea. When you hold people accountable for their actions, they follow the rules. If you put penalties on countries who dont follow the Kyoto Protocol, we will cut down on carbon emissions.

It is the first step, to globally going green.

Red, Green, and Blue

The topic I chose to research over the course of this course is the involvement of our World Leaders in combating Climate Change. No Their Serious

Over the next few weeks, the senate will be getting set to try to pass several resolutions for health care and climate change. For the climate change portion, Senators Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, and John Kerry of Massachusetts, are to put a cap on carbon emissions, but at the same promote the use of so called, "Clean Coal."

In op-ed pieces written in the New York Times, both Graham and Kerry want to pass laws that would make the United States the "Saudi Arabia of clean coal."

There is only one problem with this solution to our trying environmental times, there is no such thing as clean coal.

The idea of clean coal, is that instead of burning coal to produce electricity, which is done now, plants would instead gas or vaporize coal, and instead of releasing the harmful chemicals in the atmosphere, catch them and dispose of them in a different way.

Out of all the coal plants in this country, none are of the clean coal variety. This seems like a good idea, but when you dig deeper, you'll find that the reality is technologies to do this currently do not exist.

This link is to a political cartoon courtesy of Red,Green,andBlue.org. By the end of the century

Global Warming has been the topic of most environmental debates throughout the world these past couple weeks. This is because in 11 weeks the worlds' best and brightest are all meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark to discuss the affects climate change will have on the world, and how it will impact life as we know it, in the near future.

Apparently, near future to us and near future to scientists are two completely different things. Thursday AP reported that even if we cut emissions of Carbon Dioxide by 80%, by the turn of the century, the global temperature will have risen 6 degrees.

I realize that doesn't sound like much, but six degrees can make a difference. How do you think people in Las Vegas will feel in 100 years if instead of 112 degrees, its now 118. Or people skiing in Vermont. It was 29 degrees and amazing snow conditions with fresh powder, but instead its 35 degrees and cloudy, no snow.

Climate change is real. It has been happening ever since this planet was formed. In the middle ages there were cool downs. Now, were going the other way. Get out your SPF 70, its going to be a hot summer... in 2101.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blevy25.blogspot.com/2009/09/its-melting-by-end-of-century.html' title='IT'S MELTING... It doesn't have to be newsworthy or important to other people, but it's how you feel on a particular topic.

There are no by lines or newspapers associated with this blog, I can say whatever I wanted to, for the most part. That's The fun part of a blog.

Some drawbacks might be that people tend to believe everything they read, whether it be fact or opinnion. That could get a little tricky considering this is for educational purposes but people have to understand a blog is not a textbook.

I mean of course you still have to cite sources and connect your ideas to a particular topic so you're not rambling like me. But the beauty of a blog is that you get to really enhance your ideas and elaborate on your opinons. So have some fun, your the editor and chief.

Writing Promt

Probably, the most interesting thing we've done so far is starting a blog. The whole Current Events and writing down our thoughts was fun. Our class discusions are usually very interesting and enjoyable. The things we've learned about writing a newpaper article, the heading, the lede, dateline, are all entriguing. The whole experience of opening our eyes to the world of journalism, is well, an experience. I would love to more bloging and discussing of Current Events in the future.

Links provided by:

CNN + Wikipedia

How many Schillings do you need to be elected Senator

As reported Wednesday, September 2nd, by the Associated Press, Curt Schilling former MLB pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, is considering to run for the, "Kennedy Senate Seat."

This article is newsworthy because it's another saga in the Kennedy seat sweepstakes. Only a state away, one prominent figure, Curt Schilling, is considering replacing one the most prominent Senators in US history, Edward Kennedy. Whoever holds this seat democrat or republican will also be a huge factor in passing health care reform. This could be a crucial step in President Obama's path to making a public option. Also, if Schilling decides to run and wins this senatorial postition, he will not be the first profession athlete to take an interest in politics.

Other pro- athletes such as Jim Bunning, Steve Largent, Jack Kemp, and Bill Bradley all have held positions either in the House of Representatives or the Senate.

Apparently, no real experience is needed to become a Senator. Just being able to throw a 95 mph fastball and having profound opinions qualifies you to write laws. Now with Schilling considering to run will this turn into the Governator sweepstakes that took place in California a few years ago?

Schilling has yet to comment on whether or not if he is deffanately going to run or not, but if not, im sure Lenard Nimoy might be intrested.

PHOTO
